Understanding NDIS Plan Management
Self-managed, plan-managed or NDIA-managed — what each option actually means for your choice of providers, paperwork and flexibility.

The three ways to manage NDIS funding
Every NDIS plan uses one (or a mix) of three management types: self-managed, plan-managed, or NDIA-managed (also called agency-managed). The type you choose affects which providers you can use, how much paperwork lands on your desk, and how much choice you have day-to-day. None of the three is universally 'better' — the right fit depends on your confidence with admin, your support network, and how much flexibility you want.
Self-managed
You pay providers directly and claim it back from your NDIS funding, or draw from your own account depending on your setup. This gives you the widest choice of providers, including unregistered ones, but comes with the most bookkeeping — invoices, receipts and claims are on you (or someone you trust to help).
Plan-managed
A registered Plan Manager pays your invoices and tracks your budget for you, at no extra cost from your own pocket — plan management is funded separately in your plan. You still get to use both registered and unregistered providers, without doing the admin yourself.
NDIA-managed (agency-managed)
The NDIA pays providers directly through the myplace portal. This is the lowest-admin option, but it restricts you to NDIS-registered providers only, and claims are processed by the agency rather than instantly.
Choosing between them
If you want maximum flexibility and don't mind some admin, self-management is worth considering. If you want that same flexibility without the paperwork, plan management is often the middle ground most participants land on. If simplicity matters most and you're comfortable choosing only from registered providers, NDIA-managed can work well.
Switching plan management types
You're not locked in for life. Plan management type can be changed at your next plan review, or sometimes sooner by contacting the NDIA — worth raising with your Support Coordinator or Local Area Coordinator if your current setup isn't working for you.

FAQs
Can I use a mix of management types?
Yes — it's common to have some funding categories plan-managed and others self-managed or agency-managed, depending on what suits each type of support.
Does plan management cost me anything extra?
No — plan management is funded as its own line item in your plan and doesn't reduce your other support budgets.
